Application to River Flood Forecasting

River damage

Careful assessment of stability criteria have allowed fluvial geomorphologists to estimate Stream evolution and change based on initial channel and watershed condition and susceptibility to Aggradation and Degradation. This photographs shows a failed bridge section due to excessive scour following a large hurricane. A replacement bridge is now crossing the channel.

Operational river forecasters should note that channels moving toward new entrenchment ratios, width to depth ratios, slopes, and Sinuosity will need to have adjustments to analysis procedures. These adjustments will occur in stage-discharge curves, roughness coefficients, inflow lag curves, and storage attenuation k tables affecting inflow hydrographs and flood routing.
